Following the death of Ibrahim Momodu, a
student of the University of Benin, on May 27 in Benin City, the Edo
State capital, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar,
has directed the Commissioner of Police Edo State to take urgent and
appropriate steps to unravel the real circumstances that led to his
death.
An orderly to the redeployed officer, Amadi Idahosa, a Police Constable, allegedly shot Momodu to death in a case that has led to much public outcry.
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO of Ogida Division, Carol Afegbai, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), and her orderly, Amadin Idahosa, who shot the deceased have also been redeployed to facilitate further investigation.
Momodu was shot dead on the night of May 27 while returning home after allegedly resisting police stop-and-search. His corpse was allegedly buried by the police the following day. His corpse was however exhumed on Thursday and an autopsy carried out to determine the cause and time of his death.
While restating his administration's zero tolerance for any act that impinges on the fundamental rights of all citizens, including the rights to life, the IGP affirmed that no stone will be left unturned in the quest for the truth, stressing that the Force will not condone any act of cover-up in the case.
In a release signed by the Force Spokesperson, Frank Mba, CSP, Abubakar condoled the family, friends and colleagues of late Momodu, and implored them to remain calm and patient as the Force has put all hands on deck to ensuring a quick dispensation of justice.
