The Katsina State Government on Wednesday in Katsina said it would
sponsor 50 students to study medicine abroad this year under its foreign
scholarship programme.
Dr Garba Matazu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Higher Education,
stated this when the director and other management staff of the
National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Katsina Study Centre, called
on him.
Matazu said that already under the programme, more than 200 students
of the state were currently studying for various degree courses abroad.
He said that processes of the sponsorship documents for the 50
students were on and that they were expected leave before the end of the
year.
The Special Adviser said, ``The state government under the leadership
of Gov. Shema has committed and is still committing a lot of resources
to higher education.”
The government he said, was also supporting the NOUN Study Centre in Katsina to enhance its activities.
Matazu, who thanked the team for the visit gave the assurance that
the state government would continue to support the centre toward
addressing its problems.
He further promised to forward all the requests made by the centre to the state government.
Earlier, Dr Kabir Galadunchi, Director of NOUN Katsina Study Centre,
said the visit was to express appreciation over the support being
rendered to the centre by the state government.
He said that when the centre was established it had only two staff
and 70 students, but currently it had 22 permanent staff, more than 50
part-time lecturers and 300 students.
Galadunchi also appealed to state government to provide special
allowances for civil servants studying at the centre, fence the centre,
as well as provide additional classes and a bus for it. (NAN)
