Govt to build $4m facility to house Nigerian trainees

The Government plans to spend $4 million to house Nigerian students who come to T&T for training at the National Energy Skills Centre (NESC). This announcement was made by Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training yesterday when the NESC, Point Lisas, welcomed a new intake of trainees from Nigeria. Karim said the multipurpose hall of residence for Nigerian students would be airconditioned and comprise 52 rooms with a community kitchen, gym, reception area, an entertainment centre and connected to a wi-fi network. He said work is expected to start in October. Karim said the new batch of trainees would engage in energy sector training at the NESC drilling school at St Madeleine. “The recently established drilling school is expected to operate a revenue stream of US$140,000 for the 70 trainees spanning a six-month period,” he said. He said T&T will also benefit from a growing partnership enhancing south/south co-operation and maintaining an alliance with one of Africa’s richest and diverse economies. Karim said when Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the president of Nigeria visited T&T recently, he gave a commitment to the Tringeria initiative which is a model of the NESC’s vocational training institution in Nigeria.
