Universities Now Award Degrees to Shady Characters

Calabar — Former Vice Chancellor of the Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Ikenna Onyido said that many Nigerian universities are presently awarding their diplomas and degrees to students of unverifiable characters.
He disclosed this in Calabar at a lecture organized by the Calabar Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in honour of Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, the immediate past president of the union.
Onyido blamed the decay in the system on lack of 'value based education' as universities in the country not only offer admission to students with questionable character, but also award degrees and diploma to those not 'worthy in character and learning.'

"Just like no human society is devoid of negatives in human conduct and behavior, there are bits and pieces of these social maladies on every campus since campuses are made of human beings," He said.
Prof. Onyido who was the guest lecturer noted with regrets that 'the university culture is being watered down by the importation and domestication of some toxic values from the larger society.'
The former Vice Chancellor also attributed the problem in the system on the establishment of more universities in the country; especially at a period existing institutions are grappling with challenges of manpower and infrastructural development.
According to him, "part of the problem is the very rapid expansion of the university system as many people who work in our universities (especially within the academic staff component) have no business working or teaching in universities."
